Machining Nickel Alloy Bar
As a custom machining company serving national and international customers in the aerospace and aircraft, power generation, and commercial transport industries as well as many others, Specialty Bar Products Company (SBP) relies on high grade nickel alloy bar stock. Nickel alloy and nickel-based superalloys are known for retaining good mechanical properties and resisting both general and localized corrosion during prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures. Additionally, using nickel as an alloying element controls the thermal expansion properties of iron, making nickel alloy bar and nickel-based superalloy bar clear choices for custom parts in the following applications as well as many others:
Aerospace & aircraft component machining – igniters, pistons, and engine bolts
Marine engine parts – commercial steel shafting, propeller blade bolts, and custom components
Steam turbine parts – washers, dowel pins, studs, bolts, and nuts
Gas turbine parts – nuts, bolts, dowel pins, washers, and crossfire tubes
Commercial transport parts – specialty fasteners and commercial steel shafting
Nickel Alloy for Custom Machining at
Specialty Bar Products Company
Specialty Bar Products commonly machines several grades of nickel alloy for custom machining parts and components. SBP, however, also evaluates the end use for the machined bar product and will use internal specifications or proprietary customer specifications depending on the customer’s needs. 718 Inconel® contains
nickel and chromium as well as other important alloying elements
such as niobium, molybdenum, aluminum, and titanium. With excellent
corrosion resistance and creep-rupture strength, nickel alloy
718 is useful in custom gas turbine parts, steam turbine parts,
marine engine components, and aerospace or aircraft components.
X-750 Inconel® is a nickel alloy that contains a larger amount of chromium and is designated for use in high temperature applications such as gas turbines and jet engines. Precipitation- and age-hardenable, X-750 Inconel® is capable of reaching high strengths and known to resist chemical corrosion, oxidation, and chloride stress corrosion cracking.
K500 Monel® is a trademarked metal that contains not only nickel but also titanium and aluminum which improves the toughness as well as the strength-to-weight ratio of the alloy. Age-hardenable and highly corrosion-resistant, K500 Monel® provides high fatigue and wear resistance even in extremely corrosive environments such as seawater.
L605’s nickel base is alloyed with cobalt for excellent stress-rupture strength and high-temperature performance. L605 is used to precision machine custom parts and components for turbine blades, turbine hot path sections, and engine parts due to L605’s superior retention of mechanical properties in hot corrosive environments as well as oxidizing and carburizing conditions.
A286 machined parts and components are valuable for their resistance to corrosion and retention of strength in elevated temperatures. Hardenable by heat treatment, this nickel alloy is a good choice when machining gas turbine parts, steam turbine parts, and aerospace or aircraft components.
